Do you think going to the gym only for a cup of coffee, looking around at how the other people are working out will help you become healthier or improve your strength and performance? Not really. You can have your personal trainer tell you what to do, but in the end, it's you who must exercise to achieve the real results. I am not saying that having a cup of coffee and sitting for a while cannot be a beneficial experience; it can be a good way to relax. However, if you are looking for real results, you simply must do the work.
With mindfulness meditation, the situation is pretty much the same. Unfortunately, while we are meditating, we often spend a lot of time sitting in a relaxed position, listening to the guided meditations and our mind wanders pretty much everywhere.
Yes, it is like sitting in the gym looking around. Just listening to a guided meditation is not true mindfulness.
Sometimes it can be hard to focus your mind on the breath, for example. At the very beginning, it is normal that your mind wanders. All you need to do in this situation is just to come back to the present moment. Gradually, doing this ritual, you will improve. Soon there will be a tiny moment in time when your mind stays focused purely on your breathing. Step by step, you will master it. Those moments will become more frequent and last longer. But don’t fool yourself, it is a lifelong journey and not an instant fix.
Pleasant relaxation while listening to your guided meditation can easily convince you that you are doing what you are supposed to. But are you? Isn’t it time to take it seriously with a proactive approach? Isn't it already time to become unguided and take your progress into your own hands?
Meditation is a lifelong journey of countless benefits leading towards a healthier, happier and more meaningful life, and you can start that journey today.
